Software carbon accounting is moving closer to compliance-ready standards, with new leadership and web-specific guidance advancing at the Green Software Foundation while its SCI framework gets mapped directly to CSRD reporting. Elsewhere, Finland's January cold snap exposed strain on Nordic power infrastructure even as new transmission capacity helped, and the ECB flagged that the EU's incoming ETS2 carbon market will add modestly to inflation from 2028.
GSF white paper maps software carbon measurement to CSRD reporting
A new white paper from the Green Software Foundation's Software Standards Working Group links its Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) standard to CSRD disclosure requirements. It sets out how to move from software energy data to a compliant disclosure, with the group arguing that SCI complements greenhouse-gas accounting by adding the granularity needed to measure software impacts.
Nordic report finds January cold snap tested Finland's power system
A Nordic Energy Research analysis documents how Finnish demand hit an all-time peak of 15.6 GW on 8 January 2026, pushing wholesale prices to levels last seen during the 2021–2023 energy crisis. The report notes the new Aurora Line transmission link, commissioned in December 2025, materially improved import capacity when it was most needed, and warns that supply-side build-out lags far behind new demand.
Green Software Foundation appoints new executive director
The Green Software Foundation named Navveen Balani as its new executive director, effective 6 May 2026. He succeeds Asim Hussain, who stepped down at the end of March 2026 after nearly five years leading the organisation; Balani co-chaired the now ISO-approved SCI standard and led the SCI for AI specification.
ECB estimates ETS2 will add to inflation from 2028
The European Central Bank's assessment notes the new EU Emissions Trading System for transport, building heating and small industrial installations (ETS2) starts in 2028. Assuming a price of 46 euros per tonne of CO2, Eurosystem staff estimated the system would add around 0.2 percentage points to headline inflation in 2028, though the actual market price remains uncertain.
GSF members advance a web-specific version of the software carbon standard
In Q1 2026, work continued on the SCI for Web specification, which aims to establish web-appropriate boundaries across servers, networks, third parties and end-user devices, plus disclosure requirements so results are comparable and defensible. The effort, led by the Green Web Foundation within the GSF and in collaboration with the W3C, is being developed using an AI-assisted consensus process intended to compress the usual multi-year timeline.
