EEA: 17 circular-economy actions could cut EU climate impact by 22%
According to a new EEA briefing, a set of 17 circular economy actions could reduce the EU's climate impact by 22% — almost one billion tonnes of CO2-equivalents — cut biodiversity-loss impact by 19% and reduce fine particulate air pollution by 25%. The measures would also lower reliance on strategic raw materials extracted elsewhere, with dependence on aluminium, nickel and platinum-group metal ores falling by around 20%.
EEA estimates an €82 billion-a-year circular-economy investment gap
An accompanying EEA report finds accelerated investment is needed to meet already-adopted circular economy objectives, with an investment gap of around EUR 82 billion a year up to 2040. It identifies product design and end-of-life stages as priorities, with the largest sectoral gaps in construction, textiles, and batteries and vehicles.
Commission adopts carbon-farming certification methodologies under the CRCF
The Commission adopted three certification methodologies for carbon farming under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation, covering agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils, the rewetting and restoration of peatlands and other organic soils, and afforestation. Certification is intended to help farmers and foresters obtain result-based payments while strengthening landscape resilience and bio-based supply chains.
Nordic power system offered as a model for reliable, low-carbon grids
A European Sustainable Energy Week analysis argues the Nordic system shows reliability and decarbonisation can go hand in hand, combining dispatchable hydropower, nuclear, bioenergy, batteries and demand response with cross-border links. The authors note these interconnections allow electricity to flow to where it is most needed, easing local shortages and damping price volatility.
Green Web Foundation works on a web-focused version of the software carbon standard
The Green Web Foundation is working with the W3C and the Green Software Foundation to define a version of the existing Software Carbon Intensity ISO standard tailored specifically for the web, via a set of workshops aimed at eventually creating a focused ISO standard. The effort seeks clearer guidance on reference devices and measurement setups for credible claims about digital products' carbon footprints.
