Nordic Sustainability Briefing — 4 August 2026

European institutions today paint a mixed picture: renewables hit new records and emissions keep falling, yet the EEA warns the bloc remains off track on most 2030 environmental goals, with renewables and efficiency progress lagging targets. For small businesses, EFRAG's expanding VSME toolkit offers a simpler way to meet mounting ESG data requests from banks and larger partners.

EEA: EU likely off track for most 2030 environmental goals

The European Environment Agency's third annual 8th EAP assessment found the EU likely off track for most 2030 environmental targets, even as it continues to cut emissions and improve air quality. Compared with last year, the outlook worsened for three indicators — reflecting stagnating environmental spending, declining environmental taxes and rising climate-related losses — and none of the 28 indicators improved.

Wind and solar out-generate fossil fuels across the EU for the first time

Ember's European Electricity Review 2026 reports that wind and solar supplied a record 30% of EU electricity in 2025, overtaking fossil power (29%) for the first time on record. Solar reached a record 369 TWh, up around 20% on the year, though a decline in hydro pushed the EU's fossil gas import bill up 16%.

EEA sees GHG emissions largely on track, but renewables and efficiency lagging

The EEA's 2025 Trends and Projections report finds EU net greenhouse gas emissions fell 37% below 1990 levels in 2024, with member states projecting a 54% cut by 2030 — just under the 55% target — if planned policies are fully implemented. However, meeting the 42.5% renewables target and efficiency goals would require more than doubling the recent annual pace of change.

EFRAG expands VSME support ecosystem for smaller firms

EFRAG is building out the Voluntary Standard for SMEs (VSME) ecosystem, including a digital XBRL template and multilingual guidance, to help non-listed SMEs answer sustainability data requests from banks and larger value-chain partners. The standard is designed to act as a simplified, credible replacement for a large share of ad hoc ESG questionnaires.
