EU adopts first certification methodologies for carbon farming, opening result-based payments to land managers

The European Commission adopted three certification methodologies under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation, covering agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils, peatland rewetting, and afforestation. The framework is intended to give farmers, foresters and land managers access to financial rewards while supporting biodiversity and climate resilience.

Value-chain cap set to shield smaller firms from excessive ESG data requests

Under the Omnibus proposal, mandatory sustainability reporting would apply only to undertakings with more than 1,000 employees, while those outside scope may use a proportionate voluntary standard based on EFRAG's VSME. A strengthened "value-chain cap" would limit the information that in-scope companies can demand from smaller partners in their supply chains.

Commission reports EU on track toward its 2030 CO2 injection target

The Commission's first progress report under the Net-Zero Industry Act found the number of EU CO2 storage sites rising, with the 2030 target of 50 million tonnes of annual injection capacity described as within reach if projects deploy quickly. Denmark's Greensand site in the North Sea was expected to inject its first CO2, and Member States awarded four new permits in a single year.

Nordic energy ministers press for faster grid investment to support electrification

Meeting in Helsinki, Nordic energy ministers highlighted that electrification, data centres and hydrogen production will require significant investment in the grid and capacity, and stressed that expansion should happen soon. They noted Nordic industry has benefited from access to emission-free electricity at reasonable prices.

Software Carbon Intensity standard offers digital builders a measurement baseline

The Green Software Foundation's Software Carbon Intensity specification, certified as ISO/IEC 21031:2024, provides a standardised protocol to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of software. Framed around better code, infrastructure choices and carbon-aware computing, it gives developers a target metric applicable whether they are writing code, designing systems or managing databases.
