Commission consulted on lighter reporting standards projected to cut per-company costs
The Commission's revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards, put out for feedback earlier this year ahead of adoption, cut mandatory datapoints by over 60% and total datapoints by over 70%. The Commission estimates the changes will reduce reporting costs per company by more than 30%, with the voluntary SME standard (VSME) acting as a value-chain cap that limits information requests larger firms can make of partners with 1,000 employees or fewer.
EEA: rental and leasing of household goods grew as circular models scale unevenly
An EEA briefing finds the number of EU companies renting and leasing personal and household goods rose 13% between 2021 and 2023, to over 46,000 active businesses, with turnover up 26% to EUR 21 billion in 2023. It notes such product-as-a-service models are more likely to succeed in business-to-business markets, while expansion to consumers and government buyers is harder, and identifies scaling out, up and deep as the three main growth pathways.
Nordic renewable integration cited as a model for European grid stability
A European Sustainable Energy Week analysis argues Nordic countries have integrated large shares of renewables while maintaining reliability, aided by cross-border links that ease local shortages and dampen price volatility, plus harmonised grid codes and coordinated system planning. It cautions that other regions lack the hydropower underpinning Nordic flexibility and will depend more on storage, flexible demand and interconnections.
Green software groups advance a web-specific carbon standard for digital builders
The Green Software Foundation's SCI for Web work, progressing through 2026, aims to set web-appropriate measurement boundaries across servers, networks, third parties and end-user devices, plus disclosure requirements so results are comparable. Contributors note that measurement approaches automatically crediting "green hosting" based on provider claims can let organisations improve scores by switching hosts without reducing actual energy use.
Large-scale study finds temperate species hit harder by climate-driven local extinctions
Research in Nature Climate Change analysing resurvey data for more than 5,100 plant and animal species reports that climate change has caused more frequent local extinctions of temperate species than tropical ones, a finding the authors say overturns decades of prior studies.
WMO update points to rapid shift toward El Niño and continued record warmth risk
The WMO's seasonal update indicates a rapid warming trend in the tropical Pacific, with a near-unanimous multi-model trajectory toward El Niño and an ensemble average approaching 1.5°C for the May–July period. A separate WMO report puts a 75% chance that the 2026–2030 five-year mean will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850–1900 average.
